Momentive to showcase silicone rubber solutions at IEEE PES

April 16, 2008 -- Momentive Performance Materials will showcase a range of silicone rubber solutions for electrical utilities and power delivery professionals at the 2008 IEEE PES Transmission and Distribution Conference, to be held April 21-24 in Chicago. Products on display will include the company's Silopren Electro silicone rubbers for potential use in high-voltage insulation, rod insulation on, and hollow-core insulation for transformer and circuit breaker applications, and its Silopren Electro and Silopren LSR silicone rubbers for potential use in cabling joints and terminations.

"The latest generation of liquid silicone and high consistency rubbers are allowing us to help our customers manufacture more complex products, often while controlling their production costs and raising their productivity," comments Holger Albrecht, Elastomers global marketing manager at Momentive. "From crucial insulation applications to more efficient cable accessories, these materials are enabling those in the transmission and distribution industries to create stronger, safer, more robust products."

Momentive contends that its Silopren silicone rubbers provide a number of key performance properties, including: arc and tracking resistance; hydrophobicity recovery (even in highly polluted areas); excellent weather, ozone and UV stability; easy processing with short production cycles; colorability; low weight/density; excellent electrical insulation; and outstanding performance in a wide temperature range.

The company says its materials can be easily integrated into hollow-core insulation, including housing for transformers and oil circuit breaker applications, and into long rod insulation, to maintain the keep distance between high voltage lines and construction parts with ground potential. The materials may also factor into the manufacture of connecting parts, cable terminations and switch gear accessories, helping to smooth electrical field lines on medium and high voltage cables, while protecting cables and conductors against environmental hazards.
