Tektronix unveils new DisplayPort test platform

October 25, 2007 -- Tektronix, Inc. has introduced a new test platform for the DisplayPort 1.1 standard. According to the company, the platform represents "a complete bench for engineers wanting to optimize and validate the performance of their DisplayPort designs."

Along with introducing the platform, the company says it has further submitted new source, cable, and sink Methods of Implementation (MOI) to the Video Electronics Standards Association (VESA) as an aid to engineers and test labs performing DisplayPort 1.1 compliance testing. Additionally, Allion, a leading test lab for high speed serial data standards compliance testingm, has selected the Tektronix DisplayPort test solution to conduct DisplayPort compliance tests.

DisplayPort technology allows high-definition digital audio to be available to the display device over the same cable as the digital video signal. The DisplayPort standard was developed by a VESA Task Group, comprised of leading companies in the display silicon, connector, computer monitor, TV display, projector, and PC industry segments, with the goal of providing a next generation digital interface that is designed to replace LVDS, DVI, and eventually VGA.

The DisplayPort 1.1 specification was approved in March 2007 and was updated in September 2007 with major changes to address the inconsistencies between the compliance test specification (CTS) and the standard, particularly addressing the jitter budget for physical layer testing. The test platform and MOIs from Tektronix will help DisplayPort design developers to execute tests per the CTS.

"Establishing standards compliance for the newest generation of high speed serial technologies requires robust instrumentation and detailed test procedures for transmitters, interconnects, and receivers," comments Lynne Camp, vice president, Performance Plus Instruments, Tektronix. "The new DisplayPort test solution including the MOIs provide engineers with the tools they need to streamline and complete their compliance tests."

The Tektronix DisplayPort test platform consists of the company's DSA70804 8 GHz real time oscilloscope paired with tis DPOJET Advanced software for enableing PCI Express, HDMI, and DisplayPort compliance testing. Alternatively, engineers can utilize the company's RT-Eye and Jit3 software with existing TDS or DPO series oscilloscopes. Additional components to the platform include the company's: AWG7102 arbitrary waveform generator; DSA8200 sampling oscilloscope with IConnect software and 80E03 and 80E04 modules; P7380SMA probes and; DisplayPort fixtures from Efficere Technologies.

"Allion has had the opportunity to use the Tektronix DisplayPort test solution including an early version of the new DPOJET software," comments James Ou, director, Engineering Service Division II, Allion Test Labs, Inc. "Based upon our experience we have decided to standardize on Tektronix and implement the new MOIs to streamline DisplayPort CTS testing on behalf of our customers."

"We welcome the new DisplayPort test solution and MOIs from Tektronix," adds Alan Kobayashi, Genesis Microchip's vice president, DisplayPort and Monitor Marketing, and editor of VESA's DisplayPort Task Group. "These tools enable companies to efficiently test their designs, helping to expedite compliance with DisplayPort through the CTS. The efforts of Tektronix increase the overall set of tools that companies have available to assist in DisplayPort development and industry adoption."
